Essential Oils & Tarot: How to Make the Most of Both Worlds

Updated: Aug 30, 2021

Using Essentials Oils & Tarot

Essential oils belong in any tarot parlor along with candles and crystals. Their soothing and uplifting properties can help both the reader and the sitter focus and feel inspired all through the reading. They help create an atmosphere of trust and well being, which can highly increase the overall quality of the session.

When reading Tarot for yourself or someone, you’ll always get better results if your mind is at ease. Essential oils help achieve relaxation, confidence and ease interpersonal communication.

The best essence will be determined by your state of mind and what you are trying to achieve in the reading.

The Classics

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia & Lavandula latifolia) and Lavendin (Lavandula burnatii) are probably the most used and well known essential oils. While there are slight differences between these 3 varieties, all work as sedative and relaxing oils and will work for Tarot. They are also an absolute must have in your pantry to heal superficial skin burns, irritations, menstrual cramps and improve your sleep’s quality.

Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) is a popular scent and is largely recognized as a powerful antidepressant. Because of these soothing properties, Rosewood makes for a relaxing and comforting atmosphere that is extremely favorable for a reading. It is especially recommended for Love reading.

Whether reading for a friend or someone you don’t know yet, creating a great atmosphere with essential oils will help them feel comfortable. You can’t go wrong with classics such as Lavender, Rose or Marjoram. All 3 essences have a soothing and relaxing effect.

Marjoram is a fantastic ally for highly stressful situation. If you are reading with someone who is nervously exhausted or very tensed, try spraying or diffusing marjoram and lavender. This could make a big difference.

For a softer, more uplifting atmosphere, Tangerine will work great while its sweet smell encourages good mood too.

Linden Blossom (Tilia vulgaris) is a little less known essential oil that will also please those who enjoy sweet, higher notes. Linden Blossom works as a fantastically relaxing oil thanks to its anti-depressant properties.

It can be a good alternative if you are not a fan of citrus notes or if you want to experiment outside of lavender and camomille.

Basil is also a great classic you probably already have at home. Basil is great to relieve tensions. This powerful oil helps prevent stress and induces deep spiritual harmony. Ocimum Basilicum CT linalol is the one you’ll want for your readings.

Cinnamon is also a very powerful oil that does not only works wonders around the Wintertime. Both Cinnamomum cassia and Cinnamomum zeylanicum are strong stimulants of psychic abilities. Their essence helps us connect with the invisible. Cinnamon is also a very strong tonic for the mind and spirit.

One more reason to store a high quality bottle in your pantry all year long: Cinnamon is one of our mightiest ally against infections and bacterias.

The Citrus Wonder

Citrus essences will also help you stay aware, and better connect with the energies surrounding you. They will lift your spirit while keeping anxiety at bay. Tangerine is the softest of all citrus essences (Citrus reticulata), Clementine (Citrus clementina) is a notch stronger and share the same properties.

They’re great if you or the person you are reading for is (over)sensitive to smells as they are not too harsh.

If you want to energize your mind even more then try some Lemon essential oil (Citrus limonum) or Grapefruit (Citrus Paradisii). Its antiseptic properties will literally purify the air in the room while helping your mind stay sharp and focused.

Bergamot orange (Citrus bergamia) is also a top oil if you want something that’s kind of in the middle. Not as bitter or sharp as lemon but definitely less sweet than tangerine.

All citrus essential oils generally have a well deserved reputation for their brightening and mood lifting effects. Always a welcome bonus.

Lemon scent will make your mind more receptive to your environment while purifying the air in the room.

How to use the oils for your Tarot Reading

Use an oil diffuser in the room before and while doing the reading. Don’t forget to ventilate the room especially after the reading to keep a healthy air and atmosphere.

You can also apply a drop or two mixed with neutral vegetable oil on your wrists or behind your ears. The smell will stay close to you while the oils will work their magic.

Do not use essential oils internally if you are not familiar with the safety guidelines of aromatherapy. Remember, these are 100% natural and therefore 100% powerful.

Choosing and Buying your Essential Oils

Always buy  your essential oils from a trusted dealer. Look up the brand if you are buying for the first time. See if they are serious and specialized. Also make sure the latin name is on the bottle along with information about the extraction method. It is never serious to write “cinnamon” or “orange”. Which exact plant are we talking about? Unfortunately, some brands still make this mistake. Of course, the expiration date should not be forgotten.

The origin is very important as well: buying local is always the better thing to do even though it is not always possible.

I also strongly recommend using organic products only. Essential oils are very strong products and one should never inhale oils that are polluted by poisonous chemicals. And don’t forget to keep your oils away from direct sunlight and changing temperatures for optimal conservation.

Last but not least: make sure to treat yourself and your consultant to a herbal infusion while doing the reading. Herbal infusions such as Linden blossom, camomille and fennel will keep you calm and hydrated. They are also a bridge between your body and the oils you use in the atmosphere.
